Melyssa Stone, Assistant Principal at Shorewood High School in Shoreline, WA, has been named the 2026 Washington State Secondary Assistant Principal of the Year. Stone is one of those heroes who doesn鈥檛 want recognition, which makes her all the more deserving of it. By listening closely to students and rolling up her sleeves to take practical action, Stone has transformed Shorewood High School into a place of belonging, support, and self-advocacy.

Dr. Brent Osborn, principal at Lakeside High School in Nine Mile Falls School District, is our 2026 Washington State Secondary Principal of the Year. Osborn鈥檚 focus on strong systems and his belief in his students and staff drive powerful change in his rural school community. At a time when principal turnover is a concern for long-term student and staff wellbeing, Osborn鈥檚 14 years (and counting!) at Lakeside High School shows the impact of consistent, meaningful years in the same building.
Yesterday, the Legislature adjourned 鈥淪ine Die鈥. Over the past few days, decisions were solidified about final supplemental budgets and final bill language. Here is my description about this year鈥檚 legislative session based on the book Fortunately that I used to read to my own kids.
Today, March 1, is the last day to consider (or pass) opposite house bills (except initiatives and alternatives to initiatives, budgets and matters necessary to implement budgets, differences between the houses, and matters incident to the interim and closing of the session). March 7 is scheduled to be 鈥淪ine Die鈥 鈥 the last day of the legislative session. Work goes on behind the scenes to reconcile the two different budgets from the House and the Senate.
A collective 鈥渦gh鈥 was felt by the education community this week at the Capitol as the House and Senate released their supplemental budgets. Education advocates remain concerned by inadequate funding and we are using several talking points from OSPI to help explain why districts are facing shortages.
