In 2018, a study ranked Washington 44th in the nation for inclusion of students with disabilities, with only 57% of these students spending most of their school day in general education settings. To address this, the Washington Legislature passed Engrossed Substitute House Bill 1109 in 2019, allocating $25 million over two years to improve inclusionary practices. The Center for Strengthening the Teaching Profession (CSTP) was selected to lead the Inclusionary Practices Professional Development Project (IPPDP), with a focus on coaching and mentoring.
51¸£ÀûÉç is a proud partner in this initiative, working alongside CSTP and other organizations to help Washington state educators adopt better inclusionary practices. Since November 2019, 51¸£ÀûÉç has been gathering feedback from its members to assess their understanding of inclusion and identify their needs. This fact-finding effort aims to integrate targeted inclusionary practices into all of 51¸£ÀûÉç’s professional learning opportunities, with a focus on supporting school leaders in their critical role.
