During National Assistant Principal Week, we asked school leaders across Washington, “What makes your AP amazing?” and "What do you love about being an AP?" Your heartfelt responses reminded us once again why strong leadership is vital for thriving schools and students.

We are thrilled to announce the winners of our Amazon Gift Card Giveaway! Congratulations to these incredible APs and their nominators:

April A. Vonderharr (Principal, Tukes Valley Primary, Battle Ground PS) nominated
Salina Machida (Assistant Principal, Tukes Valley Primary)

"Our assistant principal Salina Machida is AMAZING!! She does so much for our students, staff, and families—often behind the scenes—and it doesn’t go unnoticed. From the way she jumps in to help wherever it’s needed, to the way she supports our team with patience and positivity, she makes such a big impact every day.

Our school is a better place because of her, and I’m so grateful to have her as a partner in this work. I can't thank her enough for all the heart, energy, and time she pours into our school community. Salina, you are truly valued! Hope you feel the love this week—you deserve it!"

Michelle Zimnisky (Principal, Northwood Elementary, Puyallup SD) nominated
Myra Josey (Assistant Principal, Northwood Elementary)

"Our Assistant Principal, Myra Josey, is truly exceptional. She embodies care and compassion for both students and adults, and leads with unwavering integrity. Myra keeps it real, stays open to growth, and brings a genuine spirit of learning to everything she does.

As her principal, I’m grateful for the strong partnership we share—we work seamlessly together, laugh daily at the sweet and hilarious things our students say, and support each other through it all. She is a trusted confidant and a vital part of our school community. We are incredibly lucky to have her!"

Huyen Lam (Principal, Rising Star Elementary, Seattle PS) nominated
Jennifer Kovach (Assistant Principal, Rising Star Elementary)

"I want to give a huge shoutout to my AP, Jennifer Kovach, who consistently goes above and beyond for our students, staff, and families. She is deeply committed to closing the achievement gap for our students of color furthest from educational justice, especially those who are dual-identified as MLLs and students with IEPs.

Jennifer supports instruction across the board, facilitates Tier 3 curriculum for our Special Education team, and even conducts home visits to ensure students receive the support they need.

Beyond academics, she leads our after-school Nature Club, inspiring students to connect with and care for our schoolyard wetland. Her dedication shines through everything she does. We are so lucky to have her!"

Kim DeHart (Assistant Principal, East Omak Elementary, Omak SD) shared why she loves being an AP:

"I love being an Assistant Principal because it allows me to make a meaningful impact across the entire building. I get to support and serve students, families, and staff every day.

There’s nothing better than a high five, a hug, or a heartfelt thank you after helping someone work through a tough situation. Even just being a listening ear means a lot.

Knowing I have the trust and confidence of my Head Principal empowers me to lead with confidence and give my best every day. I truly love my job—even on the hard days—and the people I work with are the reason why I show up with purpose and passion."

🎉 Congratulations again to our winners, and THANK YOU to every assistant principal making a difference every day. You are essential to building strong cultures, supporting equitable systems, and leading learning in our schools. We appreciate you!
