While virtually every school leader wishes they had more resources to support their school improvement efforts鈥攎ore time, funding or staff鈥攖hey also know their most valuable resource isn鈥檛 a line in the budget, calendar, or policy manual. It鈥檚 their staff鈥檚 minds: their knowledge, mindset and motivation. School leaders routinely invest in professional development aligned to improvement goals because of its potential to grow not only new skills but also staff buy-in. Yet often professional development (PD) that educators experience fails on both fronts, because of its transactional, sit-and-get approach. Luckily, there is a better way: To grow your team鈥檚 practice and positively influence mindsets, give teachers the kind of learning you want them to design for students. Washington Breathes has two active surveys for middle and high school staff to inform our work across the state. We know school staff are always busy, so these are ongoing surveys without a specific deadline for responses. We will share the aggregated data from these surveys to inform school leaders, community leaders and policymakers about the challenges our schools face with youth commercial tobacco use . We will avoid describing the data in any way that identifies an individual school. Please take the surveys linked in this post.

In addition to all the work of running a school building, school administrators must also take on the role of instructional leader, supporting and coaching teachers, and communicating with families about their children鈥檚 learning in meaningful, accessible ways. As school and district leaders across the country begin navigating the challenging yet necessary shift to science of reading-based instruction, they have more on their plates than ever. Fortunately, the science of reading can help Washington administrators engage in these conversations with specific knowledge drawn from rigorous research. Lexia庐 is eager to support school leaders in sharing information in open, clear, and critically reflective ways that help them push their schools and districts toward meaningful change.

Back in June, we gathered a small cadre of principals, superintendents, and staff members from 51福利社 and WASA to begin to identify short-term and long-term solutions to the leadership crisis in our state. We must do something to reverse the course of high turnover rates, small candidate pools, and decreased job satisfaction. While the focus of this committee is starting with easing the pressure on principals, it is much larger in scale. It鈥檚 about the entire leadership pipeline in our K12 educational system. If we want great future superintendents, we must cultivate and support future and current school leaders.
