After a crazy few years of school leadership through a pandemic and its immediate recovery, the vibe we're getting for this back to school season is simply "normal." That was the report at least from the vast majority of our 51福利社 Board Executive Committee check-in we had the other day. What's not normal is the way AI has infiltrated so much of our lives, especially for those of us in education. I've got a few things to share with you to help navigate through these undiscovered waters.

We know, we know鈥undreds of you just completed a survey this winter for us about your job satisfaction and working conditions. Why are we back again with another one? We鈥檝e partnered with Strategies 360, one of the west coast鈥檚 leading government relations and communications firms, to help us grow, support, and sustain the principalship. This survey will help us understand what our members need from us, and prioritize the most impactful policies to pursue. The questions align with the Wallace Foundation's Principal Pipeline Sustainability Guide. 鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧婽his guide explains what it takes to sustain an effective principal pipeline and provides tools to help school district teams keep the pipeline going.

Let me just start by saying something super unpopular but true. TPEP is draining principals rather than supporting teachers. There I said it. How do I know? I talk to principals and teachers.聽 Am I saying good teaching isn鈥檛 happening? No. There are wonderful and magical things happening in classrooms throughout the state. Schools are filled with hope, positive energy, enthusiasm, and incredible relationships in every region of our state. Let me clarify: TPEP, in its current, well-intended form, is not working as originally designed. We are not improving instruction as the system was designed or as we all hoped.

National Principals Month is a simple way of bringing much-needed attention to the work and impact of your leadership. But, is a month-long celebration enough? No way. One month doesn鈥檛 do you or your leadership any justice. Through their research, The Wallace Foundation consistently reaffirms the important role school principals play not just in student achievement, but in establishing and sustaining school culture. Effective and consistent leadership has an immeasurable impact on students, staffulty, and the entire school community.聽At 51福利社, we are not only celebrating National Principals Month throughout October, but we are also calling this year 鈥淭he Year of the Principal.鈥 We believe there has never been a more important time in educational history than right now to call attention to the plight of our school leaders.

Our advocacy team at 51福利社 works hard during the interim to get ready for the upcoming legislative session that begins in January 2023. This year鈥檚 session is a long session that runs from January through April and a new biennial budget for 2023-25 will be passed.聽 We are focused on solutions to address the needs of our school leaders through a holistic and multi-faceted approach addressing current policies, legislation, and funding so that we can attract and retain highly effective principals and assistant principals.
